I have always loved horses, I grew up owning horses, around horses and the equine world. So it was no surprise when after an injury showing horses I turned to photographing them and making art of them. Essentially I was that horse girl in school, as was basically every girl in my family.
Horses started my photography career— my sister was a barrel racer so I started taking pictures of her, learning my cameras and trying to make good shots. Even in the best lighting I definitely struggled starting out, but I learned a lot and it is no surprise I am back to work as an equine photographer.
The above image is from my first few years as an equine photographer and while it isn’t a bad image, it captures the action but the lighting is boring, and the lens choice was lacking but functional for the event. I had a great start but a lot of room to grow into the photographer I am today.
The below image shows the growth and change in my work. With dynamic lighting, composition, and clean and sharp lens choice. I have learned to photograph in all lighting conditions and to make some really beautiful and compelling barrel racing shots.
Which do you prefer my early, early work or my newer work?
