Being Real
One of the hardest things as a person, a photographer, a writer, is being 100% real and honest about my feelings and events that have happened in my life. This was especially true when I was sitting down to write my memoir Glass Eyes: A Photographers Journey.
Why?
Well, not everything that has happened during my photography career has left a great impression on me. Several things have deeply impacted me on more than an emotional level, stunting my ability to work, reason, and causing extreme highs and lows.
When I was writing my memoir the purpose was about more than telling my life story— honestly it isn’t all that amazing— it was about telling my story as a photographer and offering helpful information where I could to those thinking about taking up the career. Especially because working professional photographers are seen in such a grand light that many do not know what they struggle with behind the scenes.
I had to be open, and vulnerable with not just my life in the time I was reflecting on but with my business which was hard sometimes. But I did do it and I curated the stories and wisdom I think would most help other photographers. From tales of really stopping to get to know someone to the all to true story of betrayal, theft, and a threatened lawsuit.
On my tiktok feed I have been sharing little out takes from my book and a while back I shared perhaps one that could cause problems but speak a truth. One where the quote is representative of a very difficult time in my life but the song is representative of my soul, of the message I wanted to tell the individual who wronged me but was no longer in a position to do so.
