Becoming a Photographer
In January of 2011 I started taking photographs that I charged for. A year or two years prior to that I never would have imagined that this art form would be the one that would drive me quite as much as it has. But then I was engaged in the fine arts- drawing and painting- so this ability to capture life in a real, pure form wasn't yet on my radar in the same way. Of course now I can not imagine my life without out it, without some of the many opportunities I have had because of it. For the last ten years I have learned and evolved as a photographer, as well as studied, assisted other photographers, mentored, and traveled as a photographer to seventeen countries.
Light play is by far on of the most compelling reasons I will take a photograph. How the light dust a valley, a models cheek, or catches in my subjects eye is my motivator. I love natural images and I love making an image using available light, it use to be a rare day indeed that I would use flash on a filler light but of course as I grew and evolved as a photographer I adapted to the needs of the images and clients.
Light is a photographers friend and sometimes the lack of light is our enemy-- it depends on the image we are trying to create! I have spent a decade learning what I think is a very hard skill and that is shooting fast moving subjects in a low lighting situation without using flash and I will not lie at first I was not very good at it, but over the years that has changed and it has become one of my favorite shooting method-- typically employed shooting equine sports!
While learning photography I naturally tried many styles and shooting many different things from families to action. It is safe to say I really love it all because every shoot presents a different challenge, different expectations, and a chance to meet new, unique people who truly want images that represent who they are alone and together.
My goal is to create images that help meet or exceed the expectations in your mind. Every shoot is planned and discussed so I know exactly what you want. No two shoots are the same and unlike retail photography studios no two poses are the same making your images 100% unique.
A great joy for me is seeing clients sharing my work and the reaction their family and friends reactions to it as well, and knowing for a brief time I helped them capture a moment that could have otherwise been forgotten. And because social media and technology is such a huge part of out world, all my images can be shared on social sites. Not only that the proofing process has been digitized with online proofing galleries and online print ordering which makes sharing with family a breeze, everyone can look, download, and print their favorite images without making an appointment or borrowing a CD! In addition I can create mobile gallery apps and to make paperwork a breeze everything is online with e-signature capabilities.
For me photography is focused on my clients, on the moments in their lives whether it be running a barrel pattern on their equine or saying 'I Do' to their love.
